The Values of Manaakitanga and Whānaunatanga and how we show and share it at Nurture@Home

Manaakitanga

Hospitality, kindness, generosity, support – the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others.     https://maoridictionary.co.nz/

Whānaungatanga

Relationship, kinship, sense of family connection – a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group. It also extends to others to whom one develops a close familial, friendship or reciprocal relationship.     https://maoridictionary.co.nz/

Manaakitanga and Whānaungatanga are weaved deeply into the core of our ‘heart-led’ early learning service and underpins a lot of what we do. Firstly, through our culture of kindness and relationships – values that we pride our service on. It makes Nurture@Home feel like a place for all tamariki (children), kaiako (teachers), and whānau (families) to ‘be,’ a place that everyone belongs, a place that feels secure, nurturing and united.

From the thoughtful gestures towards children and the team members that are offered regularly, to our special celebrations within our service and those of individuals that we invite to all come together to share in. The respect that is shared between all of our extended Nurture Whānau, our rituals, and the karakia that we open and close special moments with. The encouragement of each other, and the respectful care that our kaiako provide the tamariki with each day.

Below are some lovely examples of Nurture@Home’s commitment to Manaakitanga and Whānaungatanga within our early learning service:

  • Visiting places of significance for individual children. Acknowledging their culture, background, and community.
  • Celebrating individual birthdays. This is so important to us, to show care and love for our friends!
  • Regular opportunities for kaiako and tamariki to come together with the wider Nurture@Home group to seek shared learning experiences through our weekly NatureFocus and Playschool sessions. This fosters friendships and builds emotionally resilient tamariki.
  • The care we show through our fundraising efforts for others.
  • Upholding the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. This is vital to being an inclusive learning service. Partnership, Participation and Protection of all.
  • Regular opportunities for kaiako and tamariki to come together with the wider Nurture@Home group to seek shared learning experiences through our weekly NatureFocus and Playschool sessions.
  • Providing, awhi (love) care and support as we help and celebrate our school leavers transition on to their next learning journey.
  • Holding special whānau events that encourage connections between wider whānau and Nurture@Home.
  • We spend our days ensuring your tamaiti (child) is and feels cared for, as well as offering all the learning opportunities to do so for others.

Welcome and haere mai to Nurture@Home.
