Children thrive when they feel connected. A strong sense of community and belonging helps tamariki feel safe, valued, confident, and supported as they grow and learn. At Nurture@Home, we believe that meaningful relationships and real-world experiences are just as important as educational learning, and that children learn best when they are connected to the world around them.

Home-based early childhood education offers something truly special, learning beyond four walls. Instead of spending their days at care during the week solely within one building or outdoor space, tamariki are immersed in their local communities, discovering the beauty, culture, people, and places that surround them every single day. Nurture@Home is a community within itself, where children, Educators, whānau, and the Leadership Team all work together to create nurturing environments where tamariki feel a true sense of belonging.

Having a strong sense of community is imperative for a child’s wellbeing. It helps children develop confidence, empathy, communication skills, social understanding, resilience, and independence. When tamariki feel connected to their community, they begin to understand that they are valued members of something bigger than themselves. These early experiences help shape positive relationships, emotional security, and a strong sense of identity that supports them throughout life.

One of the beautiful aspects of home-based ECE is the flexibility and freedom for learning to happen naturally within the community. Our Educators regularly take children on meaningful outings that encourage curiosity, exploration, and connection with nature and people. Whether it’s discovering the beauty of local creeks, exploring reserves and walkways, enjoying playground adventures, or visiting parks and local attractions like Natureland Zoo, every outing becomes an opportunity for rich learning and discovery.

Our regular NatureFocus outing allows tamariki to slow down, observe the natural world, ask questions, take risks, and build confidence through hands-on experiences. Children develop an appreciation for the environment while strengthening problem-solving skills, creativity, physical coordination, and social connections with others. This is also further complemented by a fortnightly ‘just gym’ session too!

Connections across generations is also incredibly valuable. Through our visits to rest homes for music sessions, tamariki experience the joy of bringing happiness to others while learning kindness, compassion, respect, and empathy. These interactions help children understand the importance of relationships and community care from an early age.

Each week, our wider Nurture@Home community comes together through Playschool sessions too, where children, Educators, and our Leadership Team connect, learn, and grow together. These gatherings give tamariki the opportunity to build friendships, develop social confidence, and experience being part of a larger group while still benefiting from the calm, nurturing environment that home-based care provides.

At Nurture@Home, we are also deeply committed to embracing and celebrating culture and diversity. We proudly welcome all cultures within our community and value the richness they bring to our learning environments. Experiences such as our visits to the marae help tamariki develop respect, understanding, and appreciation for Te Ao Māori while fostering inclusiveness and cultural awareness. We believe every child and whānau should feel seen, valued, respected, and welcomed for exactly who they are.

Community-based learning creates meaningful memories, authentic experiences, and deeper connections for tamariki. It allows children to see themselves as capable contributors within their world while building the skills and confidence they need for the future.
At the heart of everything we do is a connection. Connection to people, nature, culture, and our community. Because when children feel they belong, they flourish.
