From Busy Centres to Meaningful Connection – Meet B

Behind every home-based Educator is a story shaped by experience, values and a deep commitment to children and whānau. For B, that story began in primary teaching, but it was through becoming a mum that her passion for early learning truly came to life.

After years of working in large early childhood centres, B began to reflect on the kind of environment she wanted to offer children.

The thought of going back into an environment with so many children and not enough time or hands to really meet all of their needs just didn’t sit right with me anymore,” she shares.

Home-based education felt like the right fit — a place where she could slow down, build meaningful relationships and give children the time and attention they deserve.

B describes her environment as welcoming, enriching and thoughtfully balanced. Children have access to educational resources, opportunities for physical play and the comfort and familiarity of a home setting.

At the heart of her practice are three things: open communication, trust and connection.

I take time to really get to know children and their whānau and value the deep connections that are formed through home-based childcare.

For B, these relationships are one of the most special parts of the role.

These children and their families really become an extension of my own whānau — like lots of little nieces and nephews I get to love and care for. It’s pretty special.

One area of growth B feels especially proud of is her work with infants and toddlers. In centre-based settings, she had mostly worked with children over two, but home-based education has opened the door to a new appreciation for the earliest years.

I’ve found a new appreciation and passion for working with infants and toddlers. I loved this age and stage with my own children and am grateful for the opportunity to spend time with our littlest tamariki as an Educator.”

Being a mum has deeply shaped the way B works with both children and families. She understands the importance of seeing things from a parent’s perspective and values honest, supportive communication through every stage of development.

Alongside this lived experience, B brings the knowledge and confidence of a qualified teacher with years of teaching practice behind her.

I have worked alongside some incredible teachers over the years and have adapted my practice along the way to become the best teacher I can be. I think this experience is invaluable.

Her teaching background gives her a strong foundation for recognising and extending children’s learning, while her home-based approach allows her to do this in a way that is personal, responsive and relationship-led.

For B, learning is not about rushing children or filling every moment. It grows naturally through play, curiosity and connection. Home-based education brings together the best of both worlds — the knowledge and experience of a qualified teacher, with the warmth, flexibility and close relationships of a home environment.

“Children learn best through play, curiosity and meaningful relationships.”
