The Person Behind the Practice: Where Relationships Grow – Meet Sara

Behind every home-based educator is a story—one shaped by experiences, relationships, and a deep commitment to nurturing young learners. For Sara, this journey is not just a career, but a heartfelt extension of family, connection, and growth.

As a mum, Sara’s pathway into home-based education felt like a natural choice. “Having a daughter of my own, I wanted to stay home with her while doing something meaningful,” she shares. What began as a personal decision soon evolved into something much more—creating a space where not only her own child, but others too, could feel a sense of belonging.

Like many Educators, Sara recalls the uncertainty of starting out. “At the beginning, it felt a bit daunting… wondering if I was doing enough.” But through support and experience, her confidence grew. “The growth and friendships through learning have been amazing.”

At the heart of Sara’s practice is a strong belief in the power of relationships. “What I value is nurturing children’s happiness, comfort and safety—outdoors, connecting with nature.” She creates an environment where children feel secure and cared for, knowing this is where meaningful learning begins.

Her days are rich with exploration and connection. “I’m outdoorsy, friendship-based and family orientated,” she explains. Children are encouraged to engage with the world around them, build relationships, and follow their curiosity through play and shared experiences.

Sara’s approach is deeply personal. “I treat the tamariki as my own and share enjoyment in their learning.” This genuine care fosters strong bonds—not just with the children, but with their families as well.

One of the most rewarding parts of her role is seeing children grow in confidence beyond her care. “I love seeing children go outside their comfort zone, grow in friendships, and seeing that confidence carry into excursions and the wider world.” These moments reflect the lasting impact of a relationship-based approach.

Sara feels proud of the role she plays in supporting each child’s journey. “Watching those relationships grow means everything.”

“Where relationships grow, confidence follows.”

Note: Sara’s previous role was Assistant principal- junior school and held the SENCo portfolio whilst being a full time classroom teacher.
